The Cookware & Bakeware Alliance's Monthly Update on Navigating State Legislation

Bradley Beach, NJ, Release: For Immediate Release.

The Cookware & Bakeware Alliance (CBA) is committed to promoting and enhancing the cookware and bakeware industry, and has dedicated resources to navigating the important topic of state legislation regarding PFAS. The CBA announces additional steps forward on these efforts as a testament to its dedication on matters facing the industry.

First, the CBA would like to recognize the Cookware Sustainability Alliance (CSA), formed by a partnership between Groupe SEB and Meyer Corporation. The mission of the CSA will be to provide science-based information about the safety of cookware products for consumers, retailers, and policymakers to make informed decisions. CSA is engaging lobbyists in a number of states to advocate on legislation impacting their businesses. We commend CSA members for taking action on a topic that is important to them.

As for activities within the CBA, the CBA has signed an Engagement Agreement with BCLP on an outreach program to clarify the requirements of state legislation regulating both PFAS and Lead & Cadmium in cookware. Through this outreach program, BCLP will engage the agencies that are assigned to interpret and enforce the enacted laws. The CBA will compile member questions on compliance, and the challenges their members face, and work with BCLP to open talks with these agencies. The outreach program will begin with Minnesota, regarding HF 2310, and California, AB1200.

These two laws are enacted and are of immediate importance. Especially in Minnesota, where the legislation includes a ban on intentionally added PFAS and restrictions on the use of Lead & Cadmium. This outreach program is seen as the right starting point. From here, based on the outcome of this program, and what is learned, the CBA will plan other needed outreach with BCLP.

“We now have two important issues facing our industry, and with consumer safety and trust at the forefront of our mission, we want to be part of the solution. Through this outreach program, we will work with the agencies charged with enforcing enacted legislation to get clarification for our members, and ultimately the industry, on how to comply and to bring awareness to the issues we face in complying. Through these efforts we hope to set a template that helps us work with other states considering this type of legislation, eliminate wasted time and resources on both sides, help our members avoid noncompliance, and send a message to consumers that we are working to be part of the solution.” says Fran Groesbeck, Managing Director.

In addition to this outreach program with BCLP, the CBA has a:

  • Legislation tracker following important legislation from introduction to enacted impacting our industry
  • An education series on PFAS, in print and video format
  • Industry Updates on what members need to know about these laws, what they need to do and when

The CBA is committed to promoting and enhancing the cookware and bakeware industry, and these programs and efforts on this important topic are a testament to its dedication. “We (the CBA) are a repository for answers and working together to do the hard work to resolve important matters.” says Groesbeck.

The Cookware and Bakeware Alliance is a vital housewares trade association, delivering critical industry resources as a voice of authority and influence uniting the industry by setting engineering standards for product and consumer safety.
