Fixed.: How to Perfect the Fine Art of Problem Solving

Demonstrating a powerful paradigm shift for finding solutions, Herman will teach us to see things differently, using art to challenge our default thinking and open up possibilities otherwise overlooked. Her unexpected, insightful, and often delightful methodology is sought after by leaders and professionals for whom failure is catastrophic.

Luckily for us, these tactics work— no matter the problem’s scale or complexity. And we don’t need an art degree or previous knowledge about art to benefit from her approach, only a willingness to open our eyes and our minds. Yes, things go wrong all the time. What matters most is what we do to fix them.

About Amy Herman

Amy Herman is a lawyer and art historian who uses works of art to sharpen observation, analysis, and communication skills. By showing people how to look closely at painting, sculpture, and photography, she helps them hone their visual intelligence to recognize the most pertinent and useful information as well as recognize biases that impede decision making. She developed her Art of Perception seminar in 2000 to improve medical students’ observation and communication skills with their patients when she was the Head of Education at The Frick Collection in New York City. She subsequently adapted the program for a wide range of professionals and leads sessions internationally for the New York City Police Department, the FBI, the French National Police, the Department of Defense, Interpol, the State Department, Fortune 500 companies, first responders, the military, and the intelligence community. In her highly participatory presentation, she demonstrates the relevance of visual literacy across the professional spectrum and how the analysis of works of art affords participants in her program an innovative way to refresh their sense of critical inquiry and reconsider the skills necessary for improved performance and effective leadership. The program has been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The CBS Evening News, and Smithsonian Magazine, among others. Her TED talk, A Lesson in Looking, went live in December 2018. Ms. Herman holds an A.B., a J.D., and an M.A. in art history. Her book, Visual Intelligence, was published in May 2016 and was on both the New York Times and Washington Post best sellers’ lists.

PFAS Update Presentation

WAP Sustainability’s Value Chain Chemical Management (VCCM) system was developed to help manufacturers streamline chemical transparency efforts. The number of requests for chemical and ingredient information from consumers and authorities having jurisdictions has increased significantly over the last number of years and shows no signs of slowing down. With each new chemical transparency regulation or a request from a big box retailer, there seem to be new requirements that force manufacturers to revisit what they believed to be already completed efforts to gather new or additional information.

The VCCM system aggregates over three dozen chemical transparency efforts and regulations into one core system that manufacturers can use to streamline responses to regulations or requests. The resulting system is a verifiable data management system that functions similarly to ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 systems, with defined processes and procedures, data management functions, and clearly defined data collection and evaluation methods.

Each Value Chain Chemical Management program starts with a thorough review of the existing regulations and asks that the manufacturer is currently trying to meet/understand, including how these programs relate to one another, and an overview of the key requirements that may be common core to each regulation or request. Screening and full chemical assessments are also completed. WAP Sustainability will provide a detailed data system that meets the requirements of the regulations and ask that are in place currently.

The output of the Chemical and Ingredient Data System is a mechanism for managing chemical transparency data over time with accuracy and confidence. The Data System will be used to generate the raw data needed to meet specific chemical transparency asks, such as CA AB 1200 or HB 22-1345. Already defined processes and procedures will define how the system is updated, while supplier engagement and manufacturing process and procedures will ensure that data records are maintained as the production and supply environment changes.
